Hollywood Ideals
It's entirely coincidental that this week I've watched three movies all with smatterings of American propaganda. However, I'm questioning why this has happened, and how. I'm as yet uncertain. But, The 1962 version of The Manchurian Candidate, The Pursuit of Happiness, and tonight The Kite Runner have all left me with feelings that some people somewhere have a desire to make their beliefs felt by the masses.
Are we wrong to believe in conspiracy theories about the system using popular culture as a vehicle of propaganda.
I don't know anything anymore, which is why I'm asking you to answer this question?
My only dilemma, is that my overbearing misery inducing Mother bought me the Kite Runner, and is constantly constantly asking for my opinion.
I want to tell her my truth and shout down the phone "How dare you fucking buy me a vehicle for American propaganda!!! Just because the front cover had a little boy playing with a kite does NOT mean that it's going to be a true tale of gushy cock hardening perfection!!" and then sit and listen as she again cries for the next five minutes before hanging up the phone, again...
But there is another part of me who is prepared to tell a noble lie. A part which for the sake of personal peace and harmony, will lie and say "Mmmm. Yes, the book was a wonderful gift thanks Mother." The fact that she probably did buy me the book purely on the grounds that the front cover displays a happy little kite playing boy, makes me think that, yes, she isn't that clever, and yes, she sees me as a happy little kite playing boy. And, who am I to argue that point for the sake of a few tears?
But still, Die Spielberg Die!!!!
